November isn't perhaps the best time for a European river cruise but on this occasion, we were joining our American friends, Craig and Vicki to celebrate her birthday, while travelling with us would also be their son Jake and his husband Bradley.

Out of the 180 passengers on the boat, only 5 were from the UK (including Andrew and myself) and 155 were from the USA, many of them travelling in groups that could be noisy at times! Arriving in Budapest to heavy rain, it looked like this was setting the scene for the whole trip but as it turned out, while it was quite cold, the weather remained mostly dry and with excellent food and some very good guides on mostly complimentary excursions, the week proved most enjoyable, made all the more so by our being with such nice friends.
